da´tive|ly
da|tive «DAY tihv», adjective, noun.
–adj.
1. showing the indirect object of a verb or the object of a preposition. Latin and some other languages have a dative case. In English, the dative function is expressed by word order or a prepositional phrase: Give him the book. Give the book to him. In the Latin, Puero librum dedit, “He gave the boy a book,” puero (indirect object) is in the dative case. In Puero est liber (“a book is to the boy”), the dative case shows possession.
2. Law. a) that which can be given or disposed of at one's pleasure. b) (of an officer) that can be removed.
–n.
1. the dative case.
2. a word in this case.
[< Latin datīvus (cāsus) (case) of giving < datus, -ūs a giving < dare give]
da´tive|ly, adverb.
Usage dative case. Older grammars of English stated that nouns or pronouns used as indirect objects of a verb are in the dative case. Noun: »

The old woman gave the boy a nod as she walked by.

Pronoun: »

I bought her a fountain pen.

Most English grammars now include the dative and the accusative cases under the general term objective case.
